Topical Products to Help
Treat Acne
On the market today are many different types of acne
treatments. There are the typical over the counter
types as well as stronger prescription variety. Your
dermatologist may even use antibiotics in
severe cases but generally, treatment will begin with a topical
solution. A topical solution is any type of medication applied
directly on the skin to the affected area. Antibiotics come in
all forms including topical and over the counter, but some may
be by prescription only.
These products work not only by killing the bacteria on the
skin that is contributing to the acne, but also contain
substances that help keep the pores open. This way the
medication can get into the inflamed area better.
Topical antibiotics are not a new drug;
they have been available for many years. They have changed very
little over the years and have been seen to be helpful in
treating some forms of acne.
The most prescribed topical antibiotic for treating problem
acne is Clindaamycin. It comes in many forms
including lotion or gel and has 1% strength. You simply apply
it twice a day to problem areas of the skin; it usually has few
or no side effects. If irritation occurs, you should talk to
your physician. There are skin conditions that this is not a
recommended treatment for, your physician will discuss this
with you.
Erythromycin is another commonly used
antibiotic. It also comes in many forms like gel or ointment
but is a bit stronger at 2%. The added bonus to this treatment
is it is safe for pregnant or nursing mothers.
If acne is severe, it may require a different
type of antibiotic. In this case, an oral medication such
as Tetracycline may be prescribed. It can
be found in topical solutions at different consistencies
and strengths. This is a sulfa drug and has been known to
cause allergic reactions in some people. Generally, you
should avoid prolonged sun exposure when taking this or
any other sulfa drug.
Metronidazol is a common drug used for
treating skin lesions associated with rosacea. This gel must
be applied twice a day and comes in a .75% potency. Like
many other treatments, there is a chance of irritation.
There are all types of treatments available for acne
treatment from prescription to over the counter. Many things
must be considered to find the treatment that is suitable for
you and your particular type of acne. Things such as your skin
type, acne type and even ethnicity will play a large part in
determining the correct treatment. A
dermatologist will likely start with topical
treatments first since these are less invasive. However, you
should work with your physician to find the best acne treatment
for you.
If left untreated acne can be a serious problem.
